CAC team to be picked from ‘Fist of Gold’
THE second in the ‘Fist of Gold’ fightcard will be used to select Jamaica’s six-man boxing team to the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games to be held in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, from July 17 to August 1 this year.
General secretary of the Jamaica Boxing Board of Control (JBBC) Leroy Brown made the disclosure to the Observer yesterday.
“We will have several boxers performing and the winners of the bouts will quite likely be the ones whom we select,” said Brown.
Jamaican boxers have performed well throughout the years, gaining several medals, the last coming in Cartagena, Colombia, in 2006, where Nicolas Walters gained the bronze medal in the featherweight division.
Brown is excited at the prospects of winning gold at this year’s Games with the new emerging talents.
“They will be meeting boxers from Central America and Caribbean nations and while we are hoping that they go on to win medals, we are hoping that they learn from the experience that they acquire,” said Brown.
The general secretary mentioned several boxers whom he believes will make the team for the CAC, namely Oraine Walters, Sean Weatly, Micheal Holmes and Andre Reid.
The team will be participating in five weight divisions at the Games — light welterweight, featherweight, welterweight, middleweight and super heavyweight.
Brown said having to teams go to the CAC Games helps keeps the sport alive in Jamaica.
“The Games… are incentives for the boxers to keep training, so this is one of the benefits of having games to go to; it keeps the enthusiasm going,” he said.
