Sunshine Girls clash in ANZ league
MELBOURNE, Australia (CMC) — Goalshooters Carla Borrego and Romelda Aiken will come face-to-face when the Adelaide Thunderbirds meet the Queensland Firebirds in the ANZ Championship on Sunday at ETSA Park in Adelaide.
The two Jamaican Sunshine Girls will feature in the clash of the Birds, which is guaranteed to be a thriller, with both sides in sensational form.
This game could be a defining moment for the season because if the Firebirds come out on top, they may well replace the defending champions, the Melbourne Vixens in the top four.
After last weekend’s matches, the T-birds were third in the Championship, and the Firebirds were sixth.
Last weekend, the T-birds and the Northern Mystics, two of the three teams with Jamaicans in their line-up, were successful in their matches.
Borrego scored 43 goals from 50 attempts to help the T-birds consolidate their top four spot with a 58-47 win over the Vixens in Adelaide.
In a repeat of last year’s final, the Thunderbirds reversed that final result with a dominant effort as the Vixens slumped to their fourth straight loss.
Jamaican goalkeeper Althea Byfield’s experience came to the fore in the final minutes of regulation and extra time, as the Mystics snatched a thrilling 61-60 win over the Central Pulse in Auckland, New Zealand.
Byfield grabbed two rebounds, intercepted seven passes, and deflected eight, as the Mystics came from five goals down in the final period to force ET.
Aiken was denied a comfortable run inside the scoring circle, and Queensland Firebirds slumped to their third defeat of the season, when the New South Wales Swifts kept their unbeaten streak alive with a 44-40 victory in Sydney.
Aiken came under pressure from Swifts’ lanky goalkeeper Sonia Mkoloma, and finished with an average shooting percentage of 26 from 33.
