Maragh takes double at Belmont
NEW YORK, USA (CMC) — Rajiv Maragh produced contrasting rides to post a brace at Belmont Park on Thursday and remain in the hunt for the jockeys’ title.
The 24-year-old Jamaican opened the day’s card with a pillar-to-post ride abroad Amiga Del Sol before returning in race four to win in a come-from-behind effort with Delta Thunder.
With the double, Maragh moved to 11 wins in fourth, for adrift of leader Javier Castellano.
In race one over a mile on dirt, Maragh broke Amiga Del Sol smartly and put the three-year-old bay filly to the front to post solid fractions in a duel with stablemate Under the Rainbow.
Maragh fell behind to Under the Rainbow after passing the quarter-pole but battled back in the stretch to lead by a head, before reaching the wire ahead by the same distance.
Going 6-1/2 furlongs in race four for the four-year-olds and upward, Maragh raced Delta Thunder on the outside near the back of the field as Unique Ally made the running to be two lengths clear leaving the quarter-pole.
Delta Thunder made good progress around the turn and drew level with Unique Ally just past the furlong marker. Maragh then snatched the lead at the sixteenth pole and widened his advantage to carry the bay colt to the finish four lengths clear.
