Reno blank Cavalier 2-0
FROME, Westmoreland — Western Confed Super League winners Reno FC of Westmoreland extended their unbeaten run in the 2009-2010 football season, with a 2-0 drubbing of their KSAFA counterpart Cavalier FC in their first round Premier League Play-off home fixture at Frome on Wednesday.
Reno started quickly and took the lead in the eighth minute when goalkeeper Dennis Taylor’s kick-out went over the half line, was headed forwarded by Sheldon Bryan to Craig Foster on the right who immediately turned a cross back inside to Bryan, who fought off the challenge of two defenders to shoot past goalkeeper Everdeen Scarlet.
Trimene Perry then sealed the issue in the 74th minute.
Foster and Nyron Davis combined regularly after the opening goal with Bryan, who came close to increasing the lead in the 18th and 26th minutes, but on each occasion his shot was blocked; first by Scarlet then by a defender.
Cavalier got into attacking mode after the half-hour mark with four close strikes, two of which had Taylor executing diving saves from Fabian Swaby in the 35th and Locksley Thompson on minute 38.
In the 36th Julien Nugent fought his way into Reno’s goal area on the left side, beat the defence, including goalkeeper Taylor, then slipped the ball across an empty goal where the advancing Swaby unbelievably missed the target, much to the relief of the over 1,200 spectators who watched under an overcast sky.
Rain lashed the second half but both sets of players were still able to control the ball, make accurate passes, and occasionally shoot to goal, thus providing high quality entertaining football on the grassy Frome turf.
