Knights seek big win for place in mid-season final
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Montego Bay Cricket Club Knights need to win big this afternoon when they take on out-of-contention Junior Avalanche at the Montego Bay Cricket Club in a rescheduled Western Basketball Association’s Division One for a place in this weekend’s mid-season final.
The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was put off due to rain and the Knights, who are on eight points, must win by at least 36 points if they are to secure a place in the mid-season final set for Sunday.
Three teams are already on 10 points, led by Sav Hawks, who have secured their place in the play-off after a 70-44 win over Hopewell Vipers on Saturday.
Hanover clubs Central Flames and Vipers are also on 10 points each, but if Knights fail to get to their target, Flames will join Hawks in the play-off due to a better points differential.
Hawks have a differential of 60 after scoring 343 points and conceding 283; Flames have a differential of 53, while Vipers are on 50.
The Knights, whose biggest win this season was 91-79 over Trelawny Tornadoes, will have the edge over Avalanche, who have won just once this season and have conceded 331 points.
Interestingly, the Knights have conceded more points, 339, than Junior Avalanche.
The Knights, the Division two champions from last season, will be led by top scorers Gavin Brown and Omroy Kerr, who have combined for 171 points with Lamar Mitchell and Jamoi, who have both scored 55 points so far, also expected to get into the action.
The Sheldon Pearson-coached Knights are coming off back-to-back wins following consecutive losses and have scored 172 points in their last two games while conceding 151.
On Saturday, Hawks won their fifth game by beating Vipers 70-44, thanks to a season-high 30 points from Kenneth Blackwood; while Central Flames beat Tornadoes 58-45.
