Shaun Bridgmohan goes second at Churchill Downs
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (CMC) — Jamaican Shaun Bridgmohan took control of second spot in the jockeys’ standings when he landed a brace at the hallowed Churchill Downs on Sunday.
Bridgmohan captured race one with the two-year-old chestnut filly Primal Point before returning to snare race nine with the three-year-old chestnut colt Safe Trip.
With the double, the 30-year-old moved ahead of Frederic Lenclud into second on 15 wins, but still seven adrift of ace jockey Calvin Borel on 22 wins.
Bridgmohan opened his success on the day’s 10-race card when he broke Primal Point well going five furlongs and sent her to the front from early, pulling the field through steady fractions of 22.84 seconds and 46.73 seconds.
The Steve Asmussen-trained animal turned back a challenge from Carcava’s Hunt leaving the turn and got clear entering the stretch before being forced to turn back another from the fast-finishing Need An Angel, to get home by a head in 59.90 seconds.
His second win came over six furlongs when he raced Safe Trip off the pace before grabbing the lead leaving the turn and holding sway, crossing the wire a length clear.
