Slipe, Holmwood B advance to Open League quarters
MINERAL HEIGHTS, Clarendon — Slipe PYC and Holmwood B booked automatic spots in the quarter-finals of the Clarendon Netball Association/Jamalco Open League after respective victories over Hayes All-Stars and Gravel Hill on Sunday at the Mineral Heights Courts.
Slipe stopped Hayes 30-15 to qualify as the second-placed team from Zone Two with 12 points — three behind zone winners Windalco, who closed out the preliminary round with a perfect record of five wins after spanking Holmwood A 35-17.
Despite the loss, Holmwood A did manage to clinch a quarter-finals berth as one of the two best third-placed teams on nine points.
Sister team Holmwood B also advanced, but as an automatic qualifier from Zone Three, following a 23-11 beating of Gravel Hill. They finished second behind newcomers Mico University College on 12 points.
Denbigh A, who were thrashed 9-32 by the unbeaten Mico, finished on nine points, but made the last eight as the best third-placed team with a goal average of +43.
In other matches, Glenmuir edged Humble Lion 13-11 in a rain-affected game, while Longville Park turned back Toll Gate 17-14.
The quarter-final line-up will now see defending champions Windalco playing Optimist, Jamalco facing Holmwood A, Mico going up against Slipe, while Holmwood B and Denbigh A will clash in an all-schoolgirl affair.
