New Bowens a step closer to Major League glory
GAYLE, Clarendon — Leaders New Bowens FC inched one step closer to lifting the Clarendon Captain’s Bakery Major League after they opened up a four-point lead atop the standings with a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Gayle FC at Gayle on Thursday evening.
Ortodo Newell gave Gayle a shock 1-0 lead after 30 minutes, but Leon Callaghan hit a brace in 37th and 80th minutes to go top of the goalscoring charts with 15 strikes, while Daniel Callaghan scored the other for New Bowens to improve their points tally to 42.
They will now be hoping that second-placed Milk River United (38) lose to Longwood FC (21) today at Longwood for them to lift the title with a game to spare.
A loss for Milk River will see them surrendering the title race to New Bowens, whose 42 points would become unassailable with only one game remaining in the season.
But Milk River, who led the league for most of the season until they lost their 12-match unbeaten streak in a shock 0-2 defeat to York Town FC, will no doubt be looking to keep their title hopes alive with a win against a team ranked four places below them.
In other matches today, York Town play Young Strikers at the New Bowens Community Centre, while Gayle host Sunnyside FC at Gayle. Matches begin at 3:00 pm.
Meanwhile, Sanguinetti FC have been barred from further participation in the Captain’s Bakery Major League by CFA’s Competitions and Disciplinary Committee after they failed to show for three consecutive games despite being put on probation following similar offences earlier in the season.
