Thompson clocks 45.50 at All Comers
ORAL Thompson of the Swept Away Track Club, who clocked a creditable 45.50 seconds to win the men’s 400 metres, was the star performer at yesterday’s third edition of the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association’s (JAAA) All Comers meet at GC Foster College in Spanish Town.
Denard Coote and Darrion Bent, both of MVP Track Club, were second and third with 46.39 and 46.52, respectively.
Thompson’s winning mark and personal best is the fourth fastest by a Jamaican this season. Only 2006 Commonwealth bronze medallist Jermaine Gonzales, who posted 45.22secs, as well as Lancford Davis and Dwight Mullings, who have both clocked 45.45secs, have gone faster than Thompson this year.
Stephanie McPherson of MVP was the top female performer, winning both the 400m and 200m. McPherson, who has a season best of 51.65 achieved at the Jamaica International Invitational on May, returned 52.80secs to win the one-lap event ahead of training partner Nadia Cunningham, 53.58.
She then won the 200m in 23.26 to turn back the challenge of Sprint Tech’s Anastasia Le-Roy, who stopped the clock at 23.70.
Jacques Harvey of MVP was also a double winner. He won the men’s 200m 21.17 ahead of training partner Ricardo Brown with 21.28, and the 100m in 10.60secs (wind -1.7 m/s) to beat Oshane Bailey of Akan Track Club, 10.67.
Carrie Russell, the 2006 World Junior bronze medallist, won the women’s 100m in 11.59, despite facing a negative wind (-2.7 m/s).
Anneisha McLaughlin, who placed fifth in the 200m at last summer’s World Championships in Berlin, was second 11.77secs.
The All Comers meets are organised by the JAAA to provide athletes with the opportunity to stay fit and competitive ahead of the National Junior and Senior Championships. The Junior Championships is scheduled for June 12 and 13, while the Senior Championships will take place between June 25 and 27.
