Jem Stanley, principal of Mt St Joseph Prep, shared that The Earth Club has been in action for over a decade and this year has planted more than 30 fruit and ornamental trees. The school was disappointed at the loss of a number of the trees as a result of the drought but has already planned for the replanting of cassava, oil nut, coconut and ginger planting.
Nominee: Port Morant Environmental Club
Project: Port Morant Environmental Club
Project co-ordinator: Jermaine Buckley & Pansy Murphy
Mission: To involve our children in the environment for healthy lifestyles and beautiful surroundings
Port Morant Primary and Junior High School principal Marcia Haughton is thrilled at the recognition afforded the school’s nearly eight-year-old environmental club. “As part of a rural community, we have always wanted to involve our children in the environment. We need trees to grow around us to oxygenate our air, bear fruit and food for healthy lifestyles and to beautify our environment,” she said.
This year the club planted scores of trees, including fruit trees such as plum, otaheite apples, cherry, soursop and decorative trees, such as poinciana and poor man’s orchid.
