Bridgmohan lands Aristides Stakes with Riley Tucker
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (CMC) — Shaun Bridgmohan captured the headlines, when he won the feature US $107,900 Aristides Stakes with Riley Tucker, and completed a double on Saturday at Churchill Downs.
The 30-year-old Bridgmohan kept Riley Tucker, trained by Steve Asmussen, within striking distance in the 1,200-metre trip for Grade 3 thoroughbreds three-years-old and upward on a fast dirt track.
Bridgmohan, who was born in Spanish Town, Jamaica before emigrating to the United States with his family at age 13, guided the five-year-old, dark bay horse to the rail on the journey down the backstretch in the feature eighth race.
Riley Tucker was then advanced turning for home, and Bridgmohan moved him to the inside once in the stretch.
The two swept past Atta Boy Roy, under Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Calvin Borel, inside the final 200m, and slowly drew clear to clock 1 min, 08.34 secs — just 79 hundredths-of-a-second off the track record.
Earlier, Bridgmohan piloted the 2-5 favourite Big Flirt to a comfortable, five-length victory in the US $13,000 second race going 1,200m.
Big Flirt, a four-year-old, grey gelding, pressed the pace three-wide, challenged on the turn, took over for the drive, and drew off under steady handling for a time of 1 min, 09.77 secs.
