Flames too hot for Hawks in basketball final
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Central Flames of Hanover won their second straight Western Basketball Association Division One mid-season final on Sunday after beating pre-game favourites Sav Hawks 65-50 at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.
Flames, who had beaten Hopewell Vipers in the all-Hanover mid-season final last season, dominated the game with the league’s top scorer Craig Dorman getting a game-high 27 points and his brother Kurt pulling down 17 rebounds along with 15 points.
Flames, a finalist and semi-finalist the last two seasons, qualified for the mid-season final after Montego Bay Cricket Club Knights failed by two points in their big win over Junior Avalanche on Wednesday.
Four teams had finished the first round tied on 10 points, but with Hawks and Flames having the best goal difference, that was used as the first tiebreaker.
Flames got off to a good start on Sunday and were up by nine points (16-7) after the first quarter, and despite a rally by Hawks in the second, they still trailed 28-24 at half-time.
Both teams upped the tempo in the second half, but Hawks failed to match Flames who outscored them 37-26 over the third and fourth quarters.
In addition to his 27 points, Craig Dorman also had 10 rebounds, three assists and five steals; while Alrick Haughton also contributed with nine points and seven rebounds.
Kenneth Blackwood led Hawks with 12 points, Richard Chambers and Troy Reid scored nine points each, while George Beckford scored seven.
Meanwhile, the second round is set to commence this weekend with two games set for Saturday and one Sunday.
