In-form Simmons helps team to T20 victory
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Lendl Simmons sent another signal to the West Indies selectors, when he scored a half-century to help set up a 70-run victory for Carlton over Wanderers in the Barbados Cricket Association’s Twenty20 club championship on Sunday.
Simmons, the Trinidad & Tobago and West Indies utility player, made 58, and former Young Barbados batsman Kirk Gibson hit the top score of 68, as Carlton reached 180 for four from their 20 overs in the second-round match at the Desmond Haynes Oval in Black Rock.
Wanderers were then restricted to 110 for six from their 20 overs to give the defending champions their second straight victory.
At Beckles Road, Dave Mohammed, the T&T and West Indies unorthodox left-arm spinner, took one wicket for 16 runs from three overs on his debut for Empire, who crushed Young Men’s Progressive Club by seven wickets.
Long-standing YMPC all-rounder William Lashley, the son of former Barbados and West Indies batsman Peter Lashley, was Mohammed’s only scalp.
At The Brewery, T&T all-rounder Rayad Emrit made 17, as Maple, chasing 130 for victory, earned a seven-wicket victory over Banks with seven balls to spare.
West Indies Women’s coach Sherwin Campbell, the former Barbados and West Indies opener, had hit 35, as Banks were dismissed for 129 in 19.4 overs.
A few kilometres away at Wildey, Courtney Browne, the former Barbados captain and West Indies wicketkeeper/batsman, now chairman of the national selection panel, rolled back the years with eight fours and one six in 72 from 45 balls that set LIME up for a 91-run victory over Dover.
At Foursquare Oval, Windward Islands and Combined Campuses & Colleges batsman Craig Emmanuel led the way with 24, but the University of the West Indies were bowled out for 53 in 14.1 overs, and lost to Pickwick by 56 runs.
