Clarendon Major League to be decided today
NEW BOWENS, Clarendon — The curtains will come down today on the Clarendon Captain’s Bakery Major League season with leaders New Bowens FC needing to beat fourth-placed Gimme-Mi-Bit at New Bowens Community Centre to be crown champions.
New Bowens sit atop the standings with 42 points — just a point above second-placed Milk River United, who will be playing away to Sunnyside FC, at Curatoe Hill. Both games begin at 3:00 pm.
A win for New Bowens, irrespective of the result at Curatoe Hill, will see them claiming the title as they would move to an unassailable 45 points.
A draw or a loss could also secure for them the title, but only if Milk River draw or lose, which would see them at least maintaining their one-point advantage.
Milk River, who led the league for most of the season until they lost their 12-match unbeaten run in a 0-2 defeat to York Town, are still in with a chance of winning the title, but are under pressure to do so.
They will need to beat seventh-placed Sunnyside (17) and hope New Bowens fail to win against Gimme-mi-bit (26). Should they draw and New Bowens lose, the title will also be theirs on goal difference.
The champions will receive a cash prize of $180,000 and move on to represent the parish in next season’s South Central Confederation Super League, while the runners-up will take home $120,000.
Meantime, Young Strikers were confirmed as the first team to be relegated to the Division One competition.
They finished on 13 points — three adrift of the safe zone — and could be joined by either Gayle FC (17) or Sunnyside today.
