Seek Gold claims midweek feature
TRAINER Anthony Nunes and jockeys Omar Walker, Trevor Simpson and apprentice Doushane Gordon shared six winners to hug the spotlight on the 10-race midweek card at Caymanas Park yesterday, along with Seek Gold, who won the day’s $480,000 Henry George Harrison Snr Memorial Cup Restricted Allowance V feature.
In the midst of all this, female apprentice rider Georgina Sergeon got the scare of her life when she was thrown from her mount Super Trooper, who bolted and flung her against the rails just before the start of the last race. She, however, escaped unhurt.
Meanwhile, Nunes opened and closed the card with the 1-4 favourite Below The Waist and the 4-5 bet Class Act, respectively. Walker, who leads the jockeys championship by 12 wins, won aboard Moment Of Hope, the 4-5 favourite in the sixth race for trainer Wayne DaCosta, and returned two races later to boot home the 24-1 shot, Dolla Win, for trainer Fitzgerald Richards.
Gordon had the leg up on Natural Desire, the 9-5 favourite of the fourth race, and the 19-1 chance, Antioch, in the seventh race for trainer Gresford Smith.
Five-time champion Simpson scored with the 7-2 shot Apachebird in the fifth for trainer Linton Calder and returned to land the day’s Henry George Harrison Snr feature aboard Seek Gold.
Installed the 2-1 third favourite, Seek Gold ran 1,300 metres in 1:21.0 to beat Allthebest a 7-1 betting option by three lengths to open his winning account for the season from 10 starts in the field of eight.
Though well fancied, Seek Gold — trained by Richard Phillips — had to dig deep to get the better of a competitive field. Starking fractions 24.0, 47.3 for the first quarter, Simpson made a sharp move approaching the final 600 metres and looked a real danger just before turning for home as Allthebest ridden by the leading apprentice Aaron Chatrie brought them into the lane brushing the running rails.
Turning for home three wide, Seek Gold began to edge closer with every stride in a determined chase, but Allthebest looked resolute.
Continuing his pursuit, Simpson and Seek Gold eventually struck the front passing the 100-metre marker and went away from the field a comfortable win.
Stock Market, the even money favourite ridden by the 4.0kg claiming apprentice, was third 1 1/4 lengths back with Awesome Reward, the 8-5 second favourite completing the frame under Dane Nelson.
