Sex and the City- inspired dresses – Part I
The popularity of the movie, Sex and the City 2, is as much about fashion as it is about its characters and storyline. Fashionistas are always excited about the fabulous pieces of clothing, as well as the styling of each look. So what better source of inspiration for your own look than the classy trends in Sex and the City 2.
We selected day looks, using one each from the characters Carrie and Miranda. Carrie’s is a short, white dress with all-in-one sleeves, which is an ideal piece for being accessorised in different ways. Miranda’s dress features an asymmetrical style with shoulder detail. The steps for our version of the latter are below:
1. Cut two rectangular pieces of fabric – with the height representing length from shoulder to the desired hemline, and the width representing the shoulder measurement plus the desired length for the sleeve length (which may be about 8 – 10 inches for each side).
2. Fold each lengthwise down the centre to cut the neckline:
a. On the first rectangle, cut the “V” neckline and the top.
b. On the second, cut the neckline for the back (a curve line 1″ down and 3″ across)
3. Join front to back:
a. By sewing a 1″ stitch at the edge of the neckline and another 1″ stitch at the top edge; and
b. Along the sides, starting 4.5″ from the top edge. (the space left at the top from the 4.5″ space is an optional arm opening)
4. Finish seams and hem.
The dress was made in a symmetrical fashion, but can be worn in an asymmetrical style as shown in the images.
