Spartan, Free Town hunt Div One crown
LIONEL TOWN, Clarendon — Spartan FC will put their 12-match unbeaten run on the line when they go in search of the FX Trader/Clarendon FA Division One title against Free Town at the Monymusk Sports Club today at 3:00 pm.
At 1:30, a FX Trader Select Team will take on Clarendon FA in a promotional game, but all eyes will be on the Spartan-Free Town clash, where the teams will be playing for a $60,000 winner’s purse. The runners-up will collect $40,000.
Both teams, who are already assured of a place in next season’s Major League competition, advance to the finals in contrasting style with Spartan edging Harlem 2-1, while Free Town needed penalties to stop Chatteau Progressive 4-2.
And while Spartan were the most impressive team in the prelim and quarter-final rounds, Sunday’s game is game is expected to be a close encounter.
Spartan will enter the game with a record of 11 wins and one draw from 12 outings, scoring a league high 32 goals, while only conceding five times.
They will be pinning their hopes on Jerome Ellis, who leads the goalscoring race with 11 strikes, to break down Free Town’s defensive unit, which have only let in a league-low four goals, so far.
But, while Free Town, whose only loss came in the first round, may possess the competition’s meanest defence, scoring could become a major stumbling block as they have only netted 11 times in 14 games.
