Four grab wins in South Conference play-offs
SAINTS, Eastern Piston, Swift Sons and Spanish Town Spartans all got off to winning starts in the South Conference Basketball League play-offs at the National Stadium Courts on Saturday.
Saints defeated Denham Town 67-59; Piston stopped Mega Mart Blazers 68-47; Swift Sons defeated Portmore 81-70, and Spartans overcame Hagley Park, 66-60.
In the feature game, Phillip Reid led the way for Spartans with 15 points and seven rebounds in their victory over Hagley Park.
He was well supported by David Harrison and Michael Blake with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Hagley Park’s Kevin Daley posted a game-high 21 points and got good support came from Nicholos Finton with 11 points.
Despite losing the first quarter, 16-12, Spartans rallied to jumped into the lead, 31-25, at half-time and never relinquished it from thereon.
They lost the third quarter by two (18-16), but still held a 47-43 advantage at the interval. However, they turned the tables to win the last period by two (19-17) points to secure the win.
In another game, Saints with 20 points from Conroy Morgan and 18 points and 14 rebounds from Elvender Norman, got the better of an under-strength Denham Town side.
Tyrone de Laittibeadierre was Denham Town’s topscorer with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Vaughn Chevannes and Michael Jonhson bagged 16 points apiece as the Pistons cruised to victory over Mega Mart.
Chevannes also pulled seven rebounds and Johnson had eight assists, along with their points tally.
Rodlay Broomfield topscored for Mega Mart with 14 points and 19 rebounds.
In the evening’s other game, Demario Jackson and Omar Osavio both bagged 18 points and Greg Smith 13 as Swift Sons defeated Portmore Blazers.
Topscorers from Portmore were Garth Loaney with 14 points and 12 rebounds and Matthew McKellop with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Spartans, Portmore, Saints, Denham Town, Swift Sons and Hagley Park make up Zone One.
Zone Two consists of Eastern Pistons, North Street, Rae Town, Fire Service, Mega Mart and Arnett Gardens Rockers.
The top two teams from each group at the end of the play-offs will advance to the semi-finals.
