Unbeaten Spartan formalise Div One title
LIONEL TOWN, Clarendon — Spartan FC crowned themselves champions of the FX Trader/Clarendon Football Association Division One competition with a comfortable 3-1 win over Free Town in the final at Monymusk Sports Club on Sunday.
Kenroy Thomas scored a brace in the 15th and 55th minutes after Spartan took the lead through a 12th-minute own goal to record victory number 12 and end the competition as the only unbeaten team after 13 games.
They were also the highest scoring team netting 35 goals while conceding a league-low six.
The Chapelton-based outfit collected $60,000 in prize money and along with Free Town, who got their consolation from in the 68th from Andrew McIntosh, will play in the Major League next season.
An elated coach Ann-Marie Powell said the aim from day one was to secure a place in the Major League as Division One champions.
“I’m ecstatic,” she said. “The objective from the initial stage was to win and go to the Major League and the players and management staff all stuck to the task and gave me their full support.”
Coming into the game as the underdogs, Free Town got off to a better start and should have been 1-0 up with only two minutes on the clock, but instead found themselves trailing after 12 minutes when Andre Freeman stabbed the ball into his own net while trying to clear a ball.
Three minutes later, Spartan were 2-0 up through a contentious strike from Thomas, who beat the off-side trap, but his tame shot from inside the area appeared to have been cleared off the line when referee Cardella Samuels signalled goal.
Thomas then put the game to rest in the 55th when he collected a through pass and beat Andre Gordon in goal for Free Town with a well placed right-footed shot.
Despite being 0-3 down, Free Town never stopped playing and eventually pull a goal back on minute 68 when McIntosh fired a grounder past Oniel Allen.
