SOUTH AFRICA 2010
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South African authorities have urged World Cup visitors to be vigilant following a spate of robberies targeting foreign journalists and players before the the kick-off.
Several Chinese journalists were mugged in the centre of Johannesburg on Wednesday, the same day armed men robbed three foreign journalists in the country’s northwest. Three members of the Greek team said yesterday that money was stolen from their hotel rooms.
The government sought to reassure visitors, saying it has 190,000 policemen on the beat. And Danny Jordaan, chief executive of the local organising committee, said yesterday he was “comfortable” with the level of security.
