Young Murphy out for rest of season
FORMER Carifta Championships double champion Jazeel Murphy will not be in action for the remainder of 2010, according to his coach Carl Page.
Murphy, who won the Under-17 100m and 200m titles at the 2009 Carifta Championships in St Lucia, has been out of action nursing an injury since he struggled across the finish line in the Class 2 Boys at the 2010 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys & Girls Athletic Championships in March.
The promising youngster, who had earlier pulled out of the preliminaries of the 100m where he was to defend his title, was later trolleyed out of the National Stadium by medical personnel.
“I want him to be fully fit and ready so he’s not competing for the rest of the year,” Page, who is Murphy’s coach at Bridgeport High School, told the Observer.
It means Murphy will not compete at this weekend’s JAAA National Junior Championships at GC Foster College and by extension, will also not be eligible for the IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada, or the CAC Junior Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic — both in July.
“He’s young so he has many more years before him,” Page stated.
He added that the athlete had not yet recovered 100 per cent from the injury which he sustained earlier this season.
Murphy is the second fastest Jamaican junior athlete over 100m. His personal best is 10.41 seconds, while current leader and reigning World Junior Champion Dexter Lee has a personal best of 10.31 seconds.
