National Junior Trials on today
THE two-day Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA) National Junior Championships will take place today and tomorrow at the GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sport between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm each day.
The trials will be used to select Jamaica’s teams to the IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada from July 19-25 and the CAC Junior Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from July 2-4.
Reigning World Junior 100m champion Dexter Lee, who turned professional in 2009, a year after claiming the title in Bydgoszcz, Poland, will be among the athletes competing this weekend.
“So far things have been good. I’m just trying to stay injury-free and get to the World Juniors,” Lee said.
He will get his chance in the Under-20 boys 100m final today.
The final of Under-17 male equivalent is also on where Carifta Games Under-17 double sprint champion Odean Skeen is expected to prove his mettle.
Also expected to line up this weekend will be the Carifta Under-20 boys 110m hurdles winner Kamal Fuller, and men’s Heptathlon Open winner Ramone Bailey, who will compete in the long jump.
The finals of the 100m, 400m hurdles, 800m, 3,000m, and 5,000m will be contested today with the 100m hurdles, 200m, 400m, 1,500m, as well as the long jump, discus, high jump, javelin, and shot put to be decided tomorrow.
The javelin will be the lone final contested at the National Stadium, as there are no facilities for the event at GC Foster.
