Ronron for Racing Hall of Fame Stakes
KENVAL Wallace’s ebullient imported three-year-old bay filly Ronron heads into the $886,500 Thoroughbred Racing Hall Of Fame Stakes Trophy (Gr 11) feature in search of her fourth straight win among Open Allowance three-year-olds and upward for the first time at Caymanas Park today at 5:05 pm. First post at 12:15 pm.
The 1,200-metre dash which headlines an 11-race card to mark the 15th staging of the Hall Of Fame raceday by the regulators of racing in Jamaica, the Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC), in association with Caymanas Track Limited (CTL), promoters of local racing, will be well supported by two notable secondary feature races and several other competitive races honouring Hall Of Fame inductees.
The two secondary feature events include the $715,000 Reynold ‘Ren’ Gonsalves Memorial Cup test of stamina event over 2,000 metres for Overnight Allowance three-year-olds and upward, and the Leslie McRae Memorial Trophy event for native-bred three-year-old maidens over 1,100 metres for a similar purse.
The other honouring races to complete the programme will include the names of the eight recipients at last year’s induction ceremony — Miracle Man, Royal Minister, Is In Time, Wayne DaCosta, Hubert Bartley, Rafael Smith, Rita McKenzie and Hugh Levy.
There will be no induction ceremony for the year 2010. JRC’s general manger Ruth Ann Smith-Sutherland made the announcement at the press launch for the Hall Of Fame Race Day at Winchester Road last Monday. She said that everything was in place, including would-be recipients, to hold the event but because of the upsurge of violence in Kingston it was thought prudent not to expose patrons to any late hours on the road.
Meanwhile, on the track Ronron, trained by Gary Subratie, looks well positioned to keep churning out her wins when she takes on six rivals over 1,200 metres in the day’s feature event. It is an event which she has so far failed to conquer, having already won over 1,100 metres, 1,400 metres twice and 1,600 metres once.
In that event she was beaten by none other than the brilliant fellow American-bred three-year-old bay colt Double The Honey, who clocked an enterprising 1:11.1 and is responsible for her two defeats on local soil. The other being over 1,100 metres when her nemesis clocked a devilish 1:04.1 to be a mere one second outside the track record of 1:03.1 established by Michelle Magic in 1997.
Since then she has been a model of consistency, winning her next three races, including a smart 1:37 flat for 1,600 metres and with nothing as smart as Double The Honey in the line-up and coming in with a mere 49.0kg for her incumbent reinsman Paul Francis, the event looks a cinch for the talented daughter of Lion Heart out of the Grinstone mare Technical Analysis.
Some runners find it inexplicably difficult to win over certain races that are within their capability and should 1,200 metres be one those events which from time to time prove troublesome for Ronron, then her main threat could reside in her stablemate, the ultra-consistent and
well prepared five-year-old imported bay/brown horse Shanghai Pass.
To be ridden by the five-time champion jockey Trevor Simpson, Shanghai Pass has looked real crisp in his preparation spins at exercise for this and even with top weight of 56.0kg, being the senior statesman at this level among rivals and with blinkers added to sharpen his focus, he could deliver one of his better performances to truly test
the resolve of the talented daughter of Lion Heart.
The field is completed by New Kingston, Prince Of Peace, The Bomber, Chadman and Fee Fi Foe.
