Knotty tussles for DPL spots
ALL four teams enter today’s final round of the Jamaica Football Federation’s All-Island Confederation Play-offs with a chance of gaining promotion to the Premier League in a closely-knitted zone in which only three points separate the teams.
Cavalier, the Kingston and St Andrew Confed champions, lead the group with eight points and look set to replace fellow parish outfit, the demoted August Town, and need only a draw to do so.
Westmoreland’s Reno are second on seven points, the same as Benfica from St Ann, with St Catherine’s Meadows lying fourth on five points.
The stage is set for two intriguing encounters in which any of the four teams can qualify, with former national champions Cavalier and Reno still fancied.
The Lamar Morgan-coached Cavalier need only a draw and will travel to Drax Hall to play a Benfica team to finish the qualifiers with a flourish after losing their first two games.
On May 26, Cavalier were held to a 2-2 draw by Benfica, setting the tone for a mouthwatering clash at Drax Hall.
The parish of St Ann has not had a representative in the top league for 18 years, since Black Stars back in 1992, and the ‘garden parish’ could be blossoming once again.
Benfica opened the campaign losing 0-2 and 0-1 to Meadows and Reno, respectively, but have bounced back impressively by defeating both in the return fixtures. The momentum is certainly with Benfica and Cavalier could be in for a hard time.
Cavalier last played top-flight football in 1996 and are favoured for a return to the elite league for the first time in 14 years.
Meanwhile, former three-time winners of the Premier League, Reno, are faltering in their promotional push, having garnered a mere one point from their last three games.
However, the Wendell Downswell-coached aggregation remain in second spot, but must be a nervous bunch travelling to Ferdie Neita Park to play Meadows.
Reno, who were relegated in 2008/09 season, are looking for speedy return to the top flight but will have their hands full containing a Meadows team that will be going for broke.
Both teams battled to a 2-2 draw at Frome on May 26 and with the home advantage in their favour, Meadows could surprise and steal one of the two promotion spots.
With this being one of the closest play-off series in years, any number can play, with the advantage certainly belonging to leaders Cavalier and Reno.
