Lee powers way to 10.20 at Trials
DEFENDING IAAF World Junior champion Dexter Lee produced 10.20 seconds under stormy conditions at GC Foster College to claim the Boys Under-20 100m title at the JAAA National Junior Championships last Saturday.
Lee, running out of lane four after entering the race with the fastest qualifying time (10.25), left old Harbour’s Kemar Bailey Cole (10.61), Bernado Bailey of Camperdown (10.62), and Julian Forte of Wolmer’s (10.68) in his wake and said he was pleased in some respects with his execution.
” I think I did well in the first part of the race… I wanted a personal record but unfortunately it didn’t happen,” he said, adding that he hopes to defend his World Junior title in Moncton, Canada, this summer.
Seidatha Palmer clocked 11.79 to claim the girls’ equivalent ahead of Diandra Gilbert, 11.82, and Holmwood’s Yanique Ellington, 11.84.
The Under-17 Boys title earlier went to the double Carifta champion Odean Skeen, who stopped the clock at 10.80 seconds ahead of Odail Todd of Green Island, 10.95, and Deshawn Jackson of Jamaica College, 11.16.
In the girls equivalent, Kedisha Dallas of Holmwood posted 12.26 seconds to win ahead of Saqukina Cameron of Edwin Allen, 12.31.
Edwin Allen’s Ristananna Tracey and Dwayne Extol of Wolmer’s claimed the girls and boys Under-20 400m hurdles titles — Tracey in 58.16 and Extol in 52.97.
The defending Carifta champion Tracey said she was happy with the time, her fastest this season in the event.
“Regardless off the setbacks I had in training and the rain, I really think I did do well,” she said with reference to the conditions which caused action on the track to be delayed no less than twice.
Extol managed to prevail despite missing training a few times this week due to final exams.
“I hadn’t been hurdling… I was kind of nervous knowing I hadn’t been training a lot, but I really appreciate what my competitors came out and did because it kind of pushed me,” he said.
Meanwhile, the central Jamaican pair of Natoya Goule and Kemoy Campbell continued their seemingly unbeatable run in the middle distances.
Manchester High’s Goule posted 2:09.51 to claim the Under-20 girls 800m ahead of Petrene Plummer of Holmwood (2:13.04) and Makola Joseph of Edwin Allen (2:13.19), while Campbell, in his final year at Bellefield High, clocked 14:31.38 to take the boys 5,000 ahead of teammate Odane Wint (16:37.91).
In the field, Carifta champion Chad Wright was nearly five metres better than his nearest rival as he threw 61.07m to claim the Under-20 boys discus ahead of Calabar team mate Travis Smikle with 56.21m.
Kellion Knibb of St. Jago claimed the first title of the day when she threw 44.59m to win the Under 20 Girls Javelin ahead of Gleneve Grange of Holmwood with 33.34m.
Today’s finals begin at 2:30 p.m. and include the 200m for Under-17 and Under-20 boys and girls; 400m Under-17 and Under-20 Boys and Girls; 100m hurdles Under-17 boys and girls as well as the Under 20 girls and the 110m hurdles for Under-20 Boys; and the 1500m for Under-17 and Under-20 Boys and Girls; Under 20 Boys Long Jump; Shot Put, and Under 17 Girls Discus.
