Tony Anthony wins best male vocalist at Reggae Achievement Awards
Reggae singer, Tony Anthony, won the award for best male vocalist at the 4th annual Reggae Music Achievement Awards held Saturday June 12 at the Jamaica Canadian Center in Toronto.
From the reaction of the crowd when it was announced that Anthony was the winner in this category, it was obvious that this was a well-deserved choice. Anthony, who is certainly no stranger to the music business, has had his fair share of nominations and wins at various awards shows in Canada.
At the 2008 Canadian Reggae Music Awards, he had the honour of being the Comeback Artiste of the Year and at the 2009 CRMA show he won Recording of the Year for his critically acclaimed song, Yuh Nuh Simple. The same year, another song, Mark And The Beast, won song of the year at the Reggae Music Achievement Award .
Tony Anthony, who was nominated in three categories at the 2010 RMAA, also filled the crowd’s musical appetite when he performed his hit single Torn for the audience after he accepted his well- deserved award.
His music has been well received in reggae circles around the world since the release of his solo album, Million Chance. The first single from the album, Torn, was number one on the Canadian reggae charts for eight weeks and is currently on heavy rotation on radio in Jamaica. The video for Torn and another single Bad News are regularly seen on CVM Plus, HYPE TV, and RETV.
Special guest host at the awards show was Richie B from Hot 102 who, throughout the night, commented on the high standard of reggae music and the vast array of talented artistes residing in Canada.
Other big winners for the night include Etana for International Reggae Artiste of the Year, Busy Signal for Top International Single with One More Night, Gramps Morgan for Album of the Year, and Frankie Paul was given a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to reggae music.
Steele, Tasha T, Mandy Woods, Elaine ‘Lil Bit’ Shepherd, Souljah Fyre, and Exco Levi, are some of the other artistes who were recognised for the work they have put in last year.
According to the promoter, Delroy Sterling, “This year’s award show is the best yet. There was a respectable turn out of patrons, the show started on time and the performances by the artistes were well-received, especially special guest Frankie Paul who had the audience singing and dancing for more than an hour.”
