Classic injury puts Ashmeade in limbo
NEW YORK, USA — An injury to his left hamstring in the Men’s 100m B race at the Adidas Grand Prix at the Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island on Saturday has left Nickel Ashmeade unsure of his next move.
The former St Jago athlete got off to a good start but pulled up after about 70 metres and crashed to the track before he was later carted off.
He was, however, seen walking gingerly afterwards and he told the Observer he would know more about the injury after doing some scans, possibly in Europe.
Ashmeade, who ran 20.63 seconds in the 200m at the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association’s Invitational meet in May, said the injury could force some changes to his schedule.
Asked whether he would be showing up for next weekend’s National Senior Trials in Kingston, Ashmeade — who won a silver medal in the 200m at the 2008 IAAF World Junior Championships in Poland and a silver and bronze in the 100m and 200m, respectively, at the 2007 IAAF World Youth meet in Ostrava, Czech Republic — said: “I’m not sure, this is up to my coach to make the decision.”
He was also not sure as to where he would run next, or even what event he would be concentrating on.
His next race, he said, would depend on how soon he heals. “I’m not sure after this setback; I was depending on today’s performance, but we will have to wait and see.”
