Musical blessings for fathers
“I am very happy to see that Fathers Incorporated is putting national focus on the critical role of fathers in our society,” said Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, who addressed the audience at the Blessings for Fathers gospel concert held on Father’s Day at Kings House.
This is just one of the many objectives of Fathers Incorporated, whose mission is to change the dominant misconceptions of Jamaican fathers and fatherhood held by the general public, and also to organise fund-raising activities for their various projects.
Blessings for Fathers, headlined by NAACP Image Award and nine-time Grammy Award-winning gospel singer, musician, producer and arranger, Andraé Crouch, was one such venture. Fathers Inc teamed up with primary sponsor Megamart, the RJR Communications Group, Power 106 FM and TBC Radio among others in the staging of this soul-stirring event for fathers.

The line-up also featured some highly entertaining acts such as the Ashe ensemble who performed an electrifying song-and-dance medley composed of African and Latin dance moves, gospel reggae songs and even a short clip from Black Eyed Peas hit club song I’ve Got a Feeling. Movements Dance Company, clad in all-white, did a memorable piece and the very engaging violinist Nadje Leslie danced across the stage, accompanied by her father who played the guitar.
The 2007 Tastee Talent Trail winner, Marvin Fishley, also delivered a moving set, and celebrated veteran artiste Judy Mowatt performed a high-energy set, albeit with tracks. Included in her repertoire were the prayerful, Thank You Lord, and praise and worship favourites I Wanna Hear the Story, Rock My Soul and I Will Follow Him.
Minister and performer Chevelle Franklin incorporated the national anthem as well as a prayer for justice and unity in Jamaica into her performance, before launching into her hit single You Bring Me Joy.
Blessings for Fathers not only celebrated Jamaican fathers, it also heralded the beginning of the first-ever Father’s Week.
