Carter sidelined with hamstring injury
THE Supreme Ventures Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association’s National Senior Trials which started without a number of its top attractions, lost another one yesterday when Olympic sprint relay gold medalist Nesta Carter failed to show for the 100 metres heats.
Carter, who led off the Jamaica team that set a world record 37.10 seconds in Beijing in 2008, was expected to contend for a national title but has been sidelined with a right hamstring injury.
He watched the meet from the bleachers section of the stadium yesterday and told the Sunday Observer that he picked up the injury at a meet in Ostrava, Czech Republic, but said it “was not that bad”.
Carter could not say how long he would be out of action or when he would return to full training, saying “hopefully soon”.
Carter’s agent Adrian Laidlaw told the Sunday Observer that the plan was to take things easy and not rush back too soon and risk aggravating the injury.
Laidlaw said Carter would be among the MVP athletes leaving the island for Europe next week, but they would monitor his progress before he returns to the circuit.
Carter, who has a personal best 9.91 seconds last year in Shanghai, China, has a season best 10.09 seconds while winning the 100m at the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association’s International Invitational on May 1.
Among the other top runners not taking part at the meet are double world record-holder Usain Bolt; two-time Olympic gold medallist Veronica Campbell-Brown; world and Olympic 400m hurdles champion Melanie Walker; Commonwealth Games 400m bronze medallist Jermaine Gonzales, and sprinter Yohan Blake.
