England a big letdown
It was a disappointing performance from England yesterday as they went 0-2 down in the first half then came back with a goal and then a second which was the disallowed goal from Frank Lampard.
It was unfairly disallowed and time and again we face this issue of poor decision-making on behalf of the referees because of resistance within certain ranks to the use of technology.
In both matches yesterday, we saw examples of where incorrect decisions could have been corrected if the use of technology had of been implemented. FIFA’s point of view is that they want to keep the human aspect of the game — people make mistakes but my view is that there are enough errors in the game down to human error such as yellow cards, free kicks etc.
While I don’t think technology should be introduced for every decision, when it comes to something as crucial as to whether the ball was over the line or a critical offside decision and it has a huge impact, then technology should definitely by available to the referees.
Yesterday Germany came back after half time and scored another two goals so the disallowed goal wasn’t necessarily the decider, but had that goal been allowed it could have been a different game altogether.
Similarly, in the Argentina and Mexico game, Mexico were the better team for the first 20 minutes and then Carlos Tevez headed Argentina in front despite being off-side. If technology was in use, this goal would never have been allowed. Argentina gained confidence from the goal and went on to score a second very soon after. Argentina’s second was clearly a result of Mexico’s heads not being right after the vital decision for the first goal went against them. The third goal, however, was truly spectacular from Tevez.
These are crucial decisions — they influence people’s jobs and livelihoods, whether teams stay on or go home — it’s not good enough that mistakes at this level are put down to human error when the technology is available and being used by the vast majority of other sports, from cricket to basketball.
Despite the poor officiating, Germany deserved to go through. Rooney hasn’t scored a goal for England during this World Cup but the team hasn’t been playing to him. I referred to the fact previously, but it was clearly evident yesterday that England played as individuals — not as a team.
Despite having a younger, less experienced side, Germany played as a unit and deservedly won. When you play without a system and organisation and rely on individuals to produce moments of brilliance, you will lose most matches.
People talk about how the less traditional sides have done so well like Japan, New Zealand and the USA; these sides play as a team, they have a system and are organised in their approach and this is where England fell down.
Either way, I always thought whoever won the game between Germany and England would not beat Argentina and I still stand by that.
Germany took advantage of England’s loose defending, but Argentina’s attacking players will cause numerous problems for the German defence and they should advance to the semi-finals.
Brazil face Chile today and the Netherlands take on Slovakia — both promising to be very entertaining.
