Traffic fatalities lowest in 10 years — RSU
The Road Safety Unit (RSU) in the transport ministry says that traffic fatalities have hit its lowest level since 2000.
“This is the first time since the start of this decade that less than 150 persons have been killed on our roadway at this time,” said RSU director Kenute Hare.
“The RSU believes that as a nation we are strongly positioned to bring road fatalities Below 300 this year,” Hare added, saying that road fatalities have declined by 25 per cent when compared with similar period last year.
According to RSU fugures, traffic crashes have claimed 141 people since January, in comparison to the 189 killed over the same period last year.
In the meantime the RSU is urging motorists to ensure that their tyres are roadworthy, especially during the prevailing hurricane season.
“We are beseeching motorists to check their tyres thoroughly before venturing in the traffic environment as the tyre plays a very critical role with regards to ensuring that all roads users are safe,” said Hare.
According to Hare, the treading of the tyre should be no less than 1.6mm and motorists should inspect their tyres for bubbles in the tread or sidewalls and also for deep cuts or bulges.
Additionally, motorists have a responsibility to ensure that their tyres are properly inflated, Hare said. “If the tyres are under-inflated, they will inevitably wear out quicker, he cautioned.
