Stresscon edge Johnny Walker Black in Players Champs

Stresscon edged Johnny Walker Black 5-4 in an exciting final of the Johnny Walker Players Championship at the Kingston Polo Club on Sunday.

Match MVP Jonathan Dougall scored the winning goal in fading light in the final chukka to complement two earlier strikes from Jose Lartirigoyen and one each from Mark Chin and Stevie Fong-Yee. The game was played over four chukkas of seven minutes each.

In reply, Jorge Donovan breached the uprights twice, while Nagina Newman and Hamish Wates helped themselves to a goal each for Johnny Walker Black.

Sponsored by Johnny Walker, the tournament featured five teams sponsored by the Jamaica Observer, ICWI, Stresscon, Johnny Walker Black and Johnny Walker Yellow that took part in a series of extremely competitive matches earlier, from which Stresscon and Johnny Walker Black emerged to contest the final.

Johnny Walker Black beat the Jamaica Observer team to reach the final in a penalty shoot-out with the score deadlocked after two days of play. Jamaica Observer won the Burger King consolation Round Robin on Friday by edging Johnny Walker Yellow and ICWI teams by an extremely narrow margin.

The narrowness of victory was a striking testimony to the fierce struggle which developed in the contest between the evenly matched finalists, who each sported a professional player in 6-goaler Donovan, who appeared for Johnny Walker Black, and for Stresscon, Lartirigoyen (5 goals).

Stresscon fielded Steve Fong-Yee, Mark Chin, Jonathan Dougall and Jose Lartirigoyen, who looked more settled than their opponents did after the throw-in and made their intentions clear. They, however, had to wait until the final seconds of the first chukka before going ahead with Mark Chin breaking the deadlock inside the final minute of play and a very alert Stevie Fong-Yee nipping in to make the score 2-0 in the final seconds to send the teams to the four-minute respite.

The second chukka belonged to Johnny Walker Black who duly levelled the scores at two all. Newman first reduced the score from a 10-yard penalty early in the chukka, while Donavon brought the teams on even terms with a 60-yard leveller.

In the third chukka the teams played evenly with Lartirigoyen restoring the lead for Stresscon with a 30-yard penalty strike midway the chukka, but their opponents hit back shortly afterwards with Hamish Wates adding an equalising goal from a 15-yard spot hit. Top malleteer Donovan then handed the Johnny Walker Black team a 4-3 cushion entering the final chukka with a beautifully chipped field goal from a difficult angle.

Returning for the final chukka Stresscon showed a bit more bite in their play and got goals from Lartirigoyen a 60-yard penalty and Dougall scoring the winning goal.

Earlier, the Burger King-sponsored kiddies summer camp programme ended with a 3-1 win for Burger King Black over Burger King White in an exhibition match featuring the senior campers ranging in ages from 10 to 16 with goals from Josh Newman, Renair Ramdial and Dominic Chung.

Adam Lake replied for Burger King White from an enterprising solo run which began well below the half line and ended between the stanchions within two minutes of the start. However, his team of Fabiana Byles, Luke Clarke and Jason Prouheze-Willetts appeared to be short of their best on the day and fell short of expectations and surrendered to Burger King Black of Newman, Christopher Brown, Ramdial and Chung.
