The University Singers to tour Europe
The much acclaimed University Singers takes choral theatre to Europe from July 23 to August 15, with a five-city tour of the United Kingdom and Berlin.
The tour is being conducted under the theme, Connecting with Diaspora: Building Bridges Through Music, and forms part of the group’s continuing mission as ambassadors of the University of the West Indies.
Supported by the office of the principal Mona Campus, it sees the group performing in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham in the United Kingdom and Berlin Germany. The Singers will also participate in a number of official functions marking 48th Jamaican Independence celebrations including: July 24, British Foundation for the UWI Fundraiser, Trinidadian High Commission; July 31 – Jamaican Independence Service, St. Martin in the Fields Church, London; August 2 – Independence Performance, Jamaican Embassy in Berlin; August 8 – Independence Church Service, Association of Jamaican Nationals, Birmingham.
While the main focus is to make connections with the Diaspora, the music of the singers will reach out to many communities. Coming at a time of negative perception of Jamaica in the international community this tour will reinforce the positive aspects of the country.
The tour is also supported by the Office of the Vice Chancellor/British Foundation for the UWI, British Airways, Jamaica Tourist Board and Jamaica National Building Society UK.
