Reggae boy Burton signs for Azerbaijan club
FORMER Jamaican International Deon Burton has signed with Azerbaijan Premier League club Qäbälä, which is being managed by former Arsenal captain Tony Adams.
The 33-year-old Burton led the scoring for Charlton Athletic last season, netting 14 goals, and became Adams’ lastest signing since the Englishman took up duties at the Azerbaijan club on May 12.
Burton, who has 59 caps and 12 goals for Jamaica, became the 1997 Sportsman of the Year after he scored four goals from five games to spearhead the country to the 1998 World Cup Finals in France.
Burton’s contract with The Addicks ended in June, with his agent Darryl Powell telling the South London Press that the Sheffield Wednesday and Derby marskman may be leaving England.
“Deon’s had a firm offer from a club in Europe and we’ve had interest from elsewhere. The offer from abroad is a decent one and it’s probably more than anyone could pay in this country…,”
he said.
Burton became a member of Qäbälä on Friday, penning a two-year contract.
The Jamaican international told Sky Sports he was “excited by the challenge” and noted that at 33 the time was right for a change.
“This move ticks all the boxes for me. I have played in the Premier League, the World Cup and now I have the chance to play abroad,” he added.
