Lots of swagger for JCDC /Claro Reggae Dance Championship
Jamaican popular culture is defined through the dance and the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) has given dozens of dance groups the opportunity to showcase their skills through the World Reggae Dance Championships set for the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre tonight at 8 pm.
With local dancers, as well as competitors from Japan, the show will offer great diversity and each group is determined to prove that they are the best at ‘bringing it to the massive’.
According to competition coordinator, Juliet Cowan- Morgan, “The championship is the ideal showground for street dancers who otherwise would not have had the opportunity to showcase their talent in such a manner.”
“We have also received great feedback from dancers both locally and internationally and though some of the overseas groups who expressed interest were not able to make the trek to Jamaica, it is definitely an indication that there is room for growth,” Cowan-Morgan said.
Now in its fifth year, the event has become one of the most popular on the JCDC calendar, attracting massive crowds and increasing numbers of competitors since inception.
The $1.5 million dollars in prizes is also an incentive to “go hard or go home” with the latest dance moves on the circuit.
In addition to the competitors who will ‘get their swagger on’ onstage, patrons will be thrilled by guest performances from Tifa and the Doctor Beenie Man representing both the new blood and the experienced of our popular music.
