COMICS transformed

SUMMER is a great time to watch movies. And what better to watch than an adaptation of cartoon/comic you love? The movie studios have been drawing out the characters and stories from cartoons since forever. But of late it has become more frequent, and a sure-fire way to pull audiences to the theatre. With the release of the Last Airbender, TEENage wondered just how many movis you watched without realising their creative origin?

Here’s a list of cartoons/comics that have made the big screen. Enjoy:

1 Alvin and the Chipmunks: A struggling songwriter named Dave Seville finds success when he comes across a trio of singing chipmunks: mischievous leader Alvin, brainy Simon, and chubby, impressionable Theodore.

2 Annie: Broadway musical based on the Little Orphan Annie, a young girl’s adventures in finding a family that will take her.

3 Batman: The Dark Knight of Gotham City begins his war on crime to ring stability to Gotham City.

4 Blade: A half-vampire, half-mortal man becomes a protector of the mortal race while slaying evil vampires.

5 Casper: A paranormal expert and his daughter bunk in an abandoned house populated by three mischievous ghosts and one friendly one.

6 Catwoman: A shy woman, endowed with the speed, reflexes, and senses of a cat, walks a thin line between criminal and hero.

7 Constantine: Based on the comic book Hellblazer, Constantine tells the story of irreverent supernatural detective John Constantine who has literally been to hell and back.

8 The Crow: A man brutally murdered comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée’s murder.

9 Daredevil: A man blinded by toxic waste which also enhanced his remaining senses fights crime as an acrobatic martial arts superhero.

10 Dennis the Menace: Dennis stays with Mr and Mrs Wilson when his parents go out of town.

11 Dudley Do-Right: Clumsy Canadian mountie Dudley Do-Right chases after villian Snidely Whiplash.

12 Elektra: Elektra the warrior protects her two latest targets, a single father and his young daughter, from a group of supernatural assassins.

13 Fantastic Four: A group of astronauts gain superpowers after a cosmic radiation exposure and uses them to oppose the plans of their enemy, Doctor Victor Von Doom.

14 Fat Albert: The story of an obese boy named Fat Albert and his friends Rudy, Mushmouth, Bill, Dumb Donald, Russell, and Weird Harold.

15 The Flintstones: Fred Flintstone finally gets the job he’s always wanted, but it may just come at a price.

16 Garfield: Garfield goes on an adventure to save a dog named Odie.

17 Ghost Rider: Based on the Marvel character, stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze gives up his soul to become a vigilante, to fight against power-hungry Blackheart, the son of the devil

18 Hellboy: A demon, raised from infancy after being conjured by and rescued from the Nazis, grows up to become a defender against the forces of darkness.

19 How the Grinch Stole Christmas: Remake of the classic cartoon about a creature intent on stealing Christmas.

20 The Hulk: Dr Bruce Banner transforms into a giant green hulk whenever his pulse rate gets too high. Meanwhile, a soldier uses the same technology to become an evil version of the original.

21 Iron Man: When wealthy industrialist Tony Stark is forced to build an armoured suit after a life-threatening incident, he ultimately decides to use its technology to fight against evil.

22 Inspector Gadget: A security guard’s dreams come true when he is selected to be transformed into a cybernetic police officer.

23 Judge Dredd: In a futuristic world, Dredd, the most famous judge is convicted for a crime he did not commit while his murderous counterpart escapes.

24 The Last Airbender: The story follows the adventures of Aang, a young successor to a long line of Avatars, who must put his childhood ways aside and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations.

25 The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: In a Victorian Age world, a group of famous characters team up on a secret mission.

26 The Mask: Bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss is transformed into a manic super-hero when he wears a mysterious mask.

27 The Phantom: The Phantom, descendent of a line of African heroes, travels to New York to stop a criminal genius.

28 Popeye: The sailor-man travels to a town called Sweet Haven, falls in love with Olive Oyl, adopts Swee’ Pea, and makes an enemy with Bluto.

29 The Punisher: After his wife and family are killed, Frank Castle takes it upon himself to distribute punishment to those responsible for the vendetta.

30 Richie Rich: The richest kid in the world, Richie Rich, has everything he wants, except companionship.

31 Scooby-Doo: The Mystery Inc gang investigates strange happenings.

32 Spawn: A mercenary is killed, but comes back from Hell as a reluctant soldier of the Devil.

33 Speed Racer: The story begins with Speed Racer who is a young man with natural racing instincts whose goal is to win The Crucible.

34 Spider-Man: When bitten by a genetically modified spider, a nerdy, shy, and awkward high school student gains spider-like abilities that he eventually must use to fight evil as a superhero after tragedy befalls his family.

35 Steel: John Henry Irons uses his skills to build a suit and fight crime.

36 Superman: An alien orphan is sent from his dying planet to Earth, where he grows up to become his adoptive home’s first and greatest super-hero.

37 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: A quartet of humanoid turtles trained by their mentor must learn to pull together in order to face the menace of Shredder.

38 Transformers: An ancient struggle re-erupts on Earth between two extraterrestrial clans, the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons.

39 Underdog: A lab accident gives a hound named Shoeshine superpowers.

40 X-Men: Dr Charles Xavier leads a team of Mutants who fight for good against the evil Magneto.
