JNA eyes sharp-shooter Borrego for Games
THE Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) is hoping to get prolific goalshooter Carla Williams Borrego back into the Sunshine Girls fold in time for the tour of England as well as the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India in October.
JNA boss Marva Bernard told the Observer that Borrego has become a hot commodity following a stellar season in the ANZ Championships where she helped lead Australian team Adelaide Thunderbirds to the 2010 title in her debut season.
Borrego, who last played for the country in the 2003 World Netball Championships (WNC) in Kingston, ended the regular ANZ Championships season with a success rate of 85.5 per cent behind New Zealander Irene van Dyk, who had 93.6 per cent.
Borrego scored 534 goals to van Dyk’s 524, with the latter having made 64 more attempts. The Jamaican ended the 2010 season with 574 goals from 670 attempts in 15 matches at an average of 85.7 per cent.
Van Dyk also bested Borrego in shooting averages at the 2003 WNC, bagging 324 goals at 93 to Borrego’s (then Williams) 267 from 317 attempts at 84 per cent.
The lanky Borrego migrated in 2004 playing basketball for Broward Community College where she averaged nearly 20 points, 15 rebounds, five blocks and four steals per game in her first season en route to being selected to the First Team All-Southern Conference by the Florida Community College Activities Association.
Borrego also led Broward to the Southern Conference championship in 2004-05 and was named to the FCCAA All-Tournament Team before earning a basketball scholarship to the University of Miami.
“I would love for her to play,” Bernard told the Observer. “We are negotiating with her… I hope she will be available for the England tour.”
The Sunshine Girls, who are now in Australia for a three-Test series before heading to New Zealand for a further two Tests, will play in the FASTNET Series in Liverpool, England in October before heading to India for the Commonwealth Games.
