My Kingston – Donovan Bailey
Retired athlete, CEO-Bailey & Co
What’s your earliest memory of Kingston?
Going to Norman Manley airport at three years old to pick up a family member.
What do you miss when you’re not in Kingston?
The many fruit trees in my dad’s garden.
What are your favourite home comforts?
A great bottle of red wine, a good steak and the sound of jazz music.
What’s your middle name?
Anthony.
What would you do if you were the Mayor of Kingston for a day?
Definitely fix as many roads as possible and conduct workshops on the service industry.
What was the last bit of music that truly stirred your soul?
I was listening recently to some vintage Earth, Wind and Fire, which brought back memories of when I was young and had no responsibilities.
Name the last three places visited on vacation.
Oslo, Norway; Amsterdam and Monaco.
And the last book read?
My own book… I just handed in the manuscript of a book that I think we’ll call Champ.
And your last bit of retail therapy?
My shirtmaker, Toronto-based Marlon Durrant, just delivered 12 shirts.
Which cologne are you currently splashing?

What’s your favourite beverage?
Lots of water and a great bottle of red wine like Caymus.
And your favourite dining spot?
Whenever I’m in Kingston my dad George and I enjoy fish at Gloria’s, Port Royal.
What upsets you?
Incompetence, because I have no patience.

Share some places in your Black Book.
Hotel Costes and the Buddha Bar in Paris, France; Cubo in Lake Como, Lugarno on the border of Switzerland and Italy and Kalamata (Kaficia).
Finally, what’s your advice to a first-time visitor to Kingston?
Kingston is the engine of Jamaica with a cluster of great restaurants and people. Jamaicans are, too, the most respectful fans. They simply hail you and move on.
What’s your philosophy?
Set no limits…work hard and play hard.
