Café Curtains
Choosing window treatments can be such a hard decision, so when deciding, you have to first think about function, practically and what look you want for your room. The kitchen is one such room, and because we spend so much time in our kitchen, we want to make this room warm and inviting. Café curtains are a popular choice for kitchen windows because they give you some privacy yet still let in plenty of light. Because they are simple panels, they are easy and inexpensive to make. Simple because it’s just sewing straight lines and inexpensive because it doesn’t require a lot of yardage and there are lots of inexpensive fabrics that are great for this. Pablo’s new drapery department is just the place for a project like this; we bought beautiful coordinates for this project, and the prints carry throughout the house.
The café curtain consists of a valance and double panels, so to make your own cafe curtain, simply:
o Cut fabric for valance, the width of window frame (Our window was wider than the fabric’s finished length, so we joined the fabric on an angle at either end) The valance does not gather
o Cut fabric for panels (each panel should be the width of the window, to allow for gathers)
o Sew the sides
o To make the channel for the rod, use the same straight stitch to hem the edge, then fold over 2 inches for the channel
o Hem
o Before hanging, press the curtain, and slide the curtain rod through the channel. Use socket brackets for hanging
And you are done. Quick and easy curtains that you can make in an afternoon.
