‘Spring’ suffer first loss of Masters League season
Zone B leaders Constant Spring suffered their first lost of the 2010 JNBS Masters League season when they were edged 1-0 by Maxfield in the curtain raiser at Barbican Oval last Sunday.
Maurice McKnight scored the only goal of the game in the 74th minute.
In the Barbican Oval feature game, a brace by veteran striker Wayne Whonder was enough to give league champions Barbican a 2-1 win over Boys’ Town, and sole leadership in Zone A.
Ricardo Douglas was named the player of the week after he scored a fine hat-trick to lead Brown’s Town to an easy 3-0 win over Telecom Strikers at Vauxhall Oval. In the Vauxhall opener, Nautica and Washington Strikers played to a chance- filled 1-1 draw.
Real Mona continued their fine form as they shut out MV Exodus 2-0 in the feature game at Buttercup Park. Andrew Chisholm and Nick Ziadie scored for the Peter Moses-coached Real Mona. At the same venue, Lion Kings were awarded all three points on a 3-0 forfeit win over Thunderbolts.
In the game of the day at UWI Bowl, host Pelicans and Harbour View played to an exciting 3-3 draw. Michael Neita registered a double for Pelicans, while Keith Allen added another, and Christopher Salmon struck twice for ‘The stars of the East’, with Cory Rowe netting the other for Harbour View.
Portmore Masters blanked Shortwood 5-0 at Bell Chung Oval on a goal by Jeffrey McKoy, and double strikes by Leroy Thompson and Charles Rangling. In the Bell Chung feature game, Park Rovers thrashed Santos 3-1 on a brace by Donald Broderick and a goal by Garfield Coke, while Victor Samuels scored for Santos.
The JNBS Masters League continues tomorrow with six double-headers. In the game of the day, Pelicans tackle Real Mona at Buttercup Park in a crucial Zone A clash.
Barbican, with 22 points, hold a narrow onepoint lead in Zone A over Real Mona, who have 21 points, with Pelicans and Nautica on 16 points each. A win for Mona is imperative if they are to keep pace with Barbican in the race to top Zone A, and win a place in this season’s JNBS midseason final. Barbican, on the other hand, have a rather easy engagement as they meet Packers at Maverley Oval.
Despite their 1-0 loss to Maxfield last round, Constant Spring are a safe bet to top Zone B, as they lead their nearest rivals Park Rovers by four points, and are expected to smash bottom-of-thetable Eastern at Constant Spring Oval.
Park Rovers travel to Ferdie Neita Park to meet Portmore Masters and must win for a slim chance to make the mid-season final should Constant Spring stumble.
Barbican’s top marksman Mark Miller leads all scorers with 10 goals in the 2010 JNBS golden boot race. Real Mona’s Andrew Chisholm and Phillip Riley of Christian Ambassadors follow with eight goals each.
