Purpose-driven trailblazer
Dear Editor,
I am grateful to the Bureau of Women’s Affairs for choosing to celebrate the outstanding contribution of Angella Harvey in the shaping of US-Jamaica relations for all of some 30 years, in this the Inter-American Year of Women ( Observer, All Woman, October 4). Through her work as the cultural affairs specialist in the US embassy here, this outstanding Jamaican woman has navigated the careers of countless Jamaicans towards success who have been beneficiaries of Fulbright Fellowships to US educational and professional institutions and other grant-aided programmes. As a Fulbright Fellow myself, I certainly owe her a profound debt of gratitude.
Angella, as she is known to many, has always impressed me as one who looks beyond her own interests to great principles and there is charity of the spirit in her and the reach of the heart. This has equipped her to navigate marvellously the often complex and burdensome bureaucracy of the US State Department in assisting grantees for participation in the various exchange programmes with the United States. Her years of service to national development in Jamaica via the US embassy impresses with the feeling that she would have excelled in any area of US public administration. What is more, from her vantage point in the US embassy, she has been able to form lasting friendships with those who have participated in the various exchange and cultural programmes she oversees.
All of Jamaica should be proud of this purpose-driven trailblazer who, with humour and urbanity, has made the potential for leadership accessible to numerous Jamaicans as she secures for them a place at the pinnacle of the most prestigious educational exchange programmes which are offered by the US State Department.
Take a bow, Angella Harvey, you have earned it!
