Barbican secure berth in Women’s final
CHAMPIONS Barbican cruised into the final of the Sherwin Williams’ Womens Football League after coming from behind to whip Portmore Strikers 5-1 in their second-leg semi-final at the Spanish Town Prison Oval for a 8-1 aggregate victory yesterday.
However, the other semi-final match between newcomers Los Perfectos and Waterhouse was blown off after 20 minutes because of a waterlogged field.
Nadola Chase, Trudian Mills, Janine Dennis, Petrona Ricketts and Jodian McGregor all netted for the Charles Edwards-coached Barbican side after Kellian Fearon had put Portmore ahead in the second minute.
Edwards thought his team started complacently, but believed they came into their own after conceding an early goal.
“It became easy because we broke them very early… They went up one, but we were able to get three goals back quickly before the half-time.
“Then the target became much bigger and the task more difficult, so mentally, they (Portmore) broke down and we had total dominance,” he said.
Barbican came into the match with a three-goal cushion from the first leg, but found themselves a goal behind after just two minutes of play when Fearon struck for the Cornel Clarke-coached girls.
But despite having the better of play, it took Barbican 20 minutes to find the equaliser, eventually through Chase.
Mills put the champions further ahead with another goal in the 36th minute and Dennis scored two minutes before the break to give them a 3-1 lead going in at the interval.
Five minutes into the second half, Petrona Ricketts scored a rare goal to make it 4-1, before McGregor sealed the win with another strike nine minutes later.
Clarke said once again his players found the wet conditions difficult to handle.
“It doesn’t seems as if we can handle the wet conditions as Barbican… but we have been inconsistent and that has been our problem all season,” he said.
The replay of the other semi-final will be contested some time this week.
