Rusea’s, M’Garvey progress in D’Cup

Rusea’s High and Marcus Garvey Technical joined defending champions STETHS and Munro College in the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition after yesterday’s rained fixtures.

Rusea’s and Marcus Garvey clinched group honours and will contest the Ben Francis KO competition.

At least six games were washed out, including all three in Zone I, while two fields were deemed not fit to host games by referees, it was understood.

Munro, who lost to STETHS yesterday, booked their spot after DeCarteret College were beaten 1-0 by Lacovia, ending their slim chances of making it to the next round.

Rusea’s ensured their return to the Ben Francis competition with a 3-0 spanking of Frome Technical in Lucea, with the prolific Brian Brown scoring once and Ramon Foster getting a double.

Marcus Garvey beat second-placed Ocho Rios 3-1 and conceded their first goal after eight games to move to an unbeatable 22 points.

Three other schools who needed to win to advance all drew their matches and must wait until their next game.

St Mary Technical were held 1-1 by St Mary High in Zone D; Old Harbour dropped their first points when they rallied to draw 1-1 with Dinthill Technical — thanks to a 40-yard free-kick from Damaine Solomon in time added on in Zone J — while Port Antonio were held goalless by Titchfield in Zone K.

At Jarrett Park, St James beat Cornwall College twice in Zone A play for the first time after they came back from a first-half goal to convert two penalties for a 2-1 win.

Alwayne Barrett scored both kicks, in the 62nd and 84th minutes, after Nickyle Webber had given Cornwall the lead in the 43rd.

Cornwall have lost four games in the group for the first time in over 20 years and were losing successive games for the second time this season after losing to William Knibb in midweek.

Spot Valley, who beat Muschett 4-2 in a game which ended in near darkness, move into place on 13 points, one more than Cornwall and Muschett.

In the competitive Zone E, Maude McLeod were the only winners, beating winless Little London 2-0, while Grange Hill and Mannings drew 0-0, and Petersfield and Godfrey Stewart ended 1-1.

Grange Hill and Godfrey Stewart are tied on 15 points, one more than Mannings, who have two games in hand.

Paul Bogle moved back to the top of Zone l with 15 points after a 5-1 win over Morant Bay, while Robert Lightbourne earned their first win of the season, beating Yallahs 3-0.

Yesterday’s results: Cornwall 1 St James 2; Green Pond 0 William Knibb 2; Spot Valley 4 Muschett 2; Rusea’s 3 Frome Technical 0; Maldon vs Hopewell – waterlogged field; York Castle 0 Brown’s Town 4; Albert Town vs Cedric Titus – not played; Marcus Garvey 3 Ocho Rios 1; St Mary Tech 1 St Mary High 1; Iona 2 Brimmervale 1; Islington 1 Annotto Bay 2; Maud McLeod 2 Little London 0; Petersfield 1 Godfrey Stewart 1; Mannings 0 Grange Hill 0; Munro 0 STETHS 2; Maggotty 2 Mile Gully 0; Lacovia 1 DeCarteret College 0; Manchester vs Porus -game aborted; Edwin Allen vs Vere Tech -rained out; Thompson Town 0 Lennon 3; Garvey Maceo vs Glenmuir High -rained out; Tacius Golding vs Kemps Hill – rained out; Central High vs Denbigh High – rained out; Dinthill 1 Old Harbour 1; McGrath vs Charlemont – rained out; Port Antonio 0 Titchfield 0; Fair Prospect 4 Happy Grove 0; Morant Bay 1 Paul Bogle 5; Robert Lightbourne 3 Yallahs 0.
