Wolmer’s thunder! – Heroes’ Circles boys ambush champs 2-1

WOLMER’S Boys halted the 100 per cent win streak of defending champions St George’s College in yesterday’s ISSA Pepsi/Digicel Maning Cup clash after rallying for a 2-1 win in dramatic fasion at Heroes Circle.

Romeo Jones opened the scoring for St George’s after 18 minutes, but Lance Rookwood netted the equaliser five minutes before the break, and Desmond Campbell scored the winner five minutes after the interval to condemn the North Street boys to their first defeat of the campaign.

The Light Blues, who injected their National Under-20 representatives Devon Williams and Rohan Roye — who only returned from Guyana yesterday afternoon — dominated the early period of the match.

And after having Wolmer’s against the ropes for most of the half, the visitors deservedly took the lead when Jones beat Ornel Knight with a downward header from Roye’s corner.

The goal seem to have awakened the Wolmerians, however, and they pushed the Georgians on the defensive before Rookwood broke loose and fired under Nico Campbell in goal to tie the scores.

Rookwood could have added another a minute later, but he volleyed wide after taking a pass from Jason Wright.

However, five minutes into the second half, Campbell put the home team ahead with an exquisite scissors kick from a corner that beat the St George’s custodian all ends up.

The Neville Bell-coached team dominated the rest of the proceeding, but without success.

The game had to be halted twice — firstly, because something was hurled at one of the referee assistant, and then, with less than 15 minutes remaining, a small skirmish between supporters of both schools broke out on the Science Block, which involved chairs being hurled from the first floor.

The situation was soon brought under control, however, and the game resumed afterwards.

Kendon Anderson was especially guilty of not converting a number of chance the St George’s team created. Early in the half, he shot wide after breaking away down the left; then, on the hour mark, he was denied by an excellent double save from Knight.

In time added on, the striker inexplicably placed the ball wide of target from five yards after Wolmer’s couldn’t clear from a melee, and he had the goal at his mercy.

Wolmer’s also had a glorious chance to extend their lead midway the half, but Wright shot over the bar from six yards after an ingenious pass from Omar Holness.

St George’s coach Neville ‘Bertis’ Bell said his only concern was that they were not creating a lot of scoring chances.

“We didn’t get a lot of opportunties until the last 15 minutes… but I don’t think we deserve three points today although we fought hard. We just didn’t play as well as George’s normally plays,” he said.

His counterpart Ludlow Bernard was also not pleased with his team’s performance, but thought the points were very important.

“Three points in this particular zone is highly welcomed… and I’m hoping that we can continue on this form until we get back our ‘A’ game together,” he said.

In the group’s other matches, St Jago turned back Ardenne 4-2, while Spanish Town defeated Edith Dalton James 3-0 through a double strike from Kenroy Powell and one from Romeo Hinds.

St George’s lead the group on 18 points, followed by Wolmer’s a point back and Spanish Town two points off the lead. St Jago sit fourth with 13 ponts.

Meanwhile in Group C, Innswood High joined Excelsior at the top with 19 points, after Chevon McFarlane’s lone goal carried them to a 1-0 win over Charlie Smith.

Calabar (third) also strengthened themselves for a place in the next round after a 6-1 drubbing of St Andrew College.

Kyle Scott scored a hat-trick, Chevon Marsh netted twice and Akeel Barrett once for Calabar, who have 16 points.

Over in Group A, Waterford edged Camperdown 1-0 on captain Rohan Bailey’s goal; Jamaica College cruised past Oberlin 8-0, while Cumberland and St Mary’s College played to a 2-2 draw.

Jamaica College lead the group with 16 points, four ahead of Camperdown. Waterford are third on 10 points from four games.

The competition continues today with the following games: Dunoon vs Tivoli; Ascot vs Jose Marti; St Andrew Technical vs Mona High; Pembroke Hall vs Norman Manley; Holy Trinity vs Penwood; Kingston College vs St Catherine; Jonathan Grant vs Tarrant and Hydel vs Campion College. Matches begin at 3:30 pm.
