Fatty Bum Bum romps Cash Pot Trophy
THREE-TO-ONE chance Fatty Bum Bum ridden by champion jockey Omar Walker won the sixth running of the $2.95 million Cash Pot “Only One For Me” Trophy Gr 11 feature at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Also highlighting the Cash Pot Race Day 10-race card was the American-bred four-year-old filly Honeyofalady. Showing gritty determination when challenged by the light weighted Hail The Genius, ridden by Dick Cardenas in the stretch drive, Honeyofalady coupled up under the big weight and won the $1,188,000 None Such Sprint Trophy secondary feature by 1 1/4 lengths.
Trained by Dwight Chen, who is also a part owner, Honeyofalady, ridden by Doushane Gordon, ran 1,200 metres in 1:11.2 minutes as the 8-5 favourite among Graded Stakes three-year-olds upward. Six ran.
A Graded Stakes race for native-bred two-year-olds, the principal feature was the first-leg of the Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL) ultra-rich “Triple” Series of races which offers prize money in excess of $11 million and to be run over distances of 1,200 metres, 1,400 metres and 1,600 metres.
Fatty Bum Bum, a bay filly owned by Elizabeth DaCosta and prepared by her husband Wayne, was winning for the third time from four career starts and she galloped 1,200 metres in a pleasing 1:12.3 minutes to demolish her two-year-old rivals by 5 3/4 lengths. Thirteen ran.
It was a victory which did not surprise trainer DaCosta: “This I figure was an excellent performance by Fatty Bum Bum. She has shown speed, but not really pulling off in the final 200 metres. Today (yesterday) I thought she was awesome. She was able to sit close to the pace and when asked to run at the top of the straight she just demolished the field.”
Victory was always on the books according to winning the rider, who had expected this type of performance judging by the manner in which the speedy filly prepared for the race: “She has been working very well in the mornings and the trainer prepared her very well….. as day by day she grew from strength to strength. So I came in pretty confident today. The game plan was to go for the lead, but I did not rush her as I saw the seven horse (saddle cloth number seven which is Blender) come to test the headline (lead) so I just sat and waited for the stretch run,” Walker recounted.
The chestnut colt Shinning Gold, a 4-1 bet riding the bends for the first time from three starts and who formed a threesome on the headline from the off with 27-1 bet Blender with Carlton Malcolm astride, failed to be intimidated after he was dismissed by Fatty Bum Bum leaving the 500-metre pole. Gathering momentum thereafter he closed steadily to be second best ridden by Richard Mitchell.
Isn’tshesomethin ridden by Trevor Simpson finished third, half-a-length back, while Saragossa partnered by Clive Lynch completed the frame at odds of 29-1.
Fatty Bum Bum by Storm Craft out of Birdstow (Law Of The Sea) and bred by Allan Flowers, was winning for the third time from four career starts with one second place finish, and pocketed $1,610,700 as the winner’s share for earnings of $2,754,450 lifetime.
