Jamaican music on show in award-winning RiseUp
RISEUP, the feature-length documentary showcasing Jamaica’s underground music scene is a highly decorated film, has been capturing the attention of industry insiders on three continents.
With the local premiere set for October 26 at the historic Carib Cinema in Kingston.
RiseUp follows the distinct lives of three artistes struggling in their unique way for their big break into Jamaica’s highly competitive music industry.
Since its world premiere at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), where it received the Top Ten Audience Award, RiseUp has been racking up awards, official selections for world-renowned festivals, rave reviews and screening in over 20 countries on its way to the Jamaican audience.
RiseUp scored when it won the Best Music Documentary Award from the Silver Docs, an American Film Institute, and Discovery Channel Film Festival. Earlier this year, RiseUp was chosen by New York’s Lincoln Center Film Society to celebrate Black History Month and a one-hour version of the film was broadcasted by many television networks worldwide including the BBC on its Storyville programme.
The film was officially selected for HotDocs, the Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto, DocAviv Film Festival, Camden International Film Festival, Bahamas International Film Festival, Salem Film Fest and KAPU Film Festival in Austria. RiseUp acclaim also intensified with its selection as closing night film at Lemesos Doc Festival in Cyprus.
The documentary, lauded for its authenticity, has also been screened at some international landmarks, including the prestigious Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York, Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne, Cinema Politica in Montreal, Canada and the Connecticut-based, Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art among others.
RiseUp opens in theatres islandwide on October 27.
