Portmore brace for stalking Lion
Leaders Portmore United will welcome Humble Lion to Ferdie Neita Park in a full slate of rescheduled games of the Digicel Premier League (DPL) today.
Former champions Portmore United, who had a disappointed 2009/2010 season, are on top of the league with 14 points and will come face to face with a coach who led them to victory on the other side of the bench in Lenworth Hyde Snr, the new man in charge at Humble Lion.
Portmore, with four wins from seven games, are playing some good attacking football, especially with the diminutive Eric Vernan playing in an advanced position. He, along with the dangerous Steven Morrissey, are hard to contain and Humble Lion (four points) will have their hands full in trying to do so.
This match will also be intriguing as several former Portmore players are on the roster of Humble Lion and an epic battle is in store.
Shawn Sawyers, Tyrone Sawyers, Cornelius Henry, Loxley Thomas left Portmore for the emerging Humble Lion. They will be joined on the battle field by Denzil Watson, Narado Brown, Roberto Fletcher as Humble Lion hunt their second win of the campaign.
Portmore — with their young core of talent in the likes of Ricardo Cousins, Tremaine Stewart, Shauntel Mundle, Bryan Bayliss, Dwayne Kerr, Adrian Reid — should prove hard to beat at home.
Second-placed Waterhouse (13 points) and eighth-placed Arnett Gardens (nine) will meet at Drewsland in another interesting game that could be too close to call.
Third-placed Boys’ Town (13), fresh from their 1-0 win over Waterhouse, are favoured to get the better of a 10th-placed Village United team on six points.
Champions Harbour View have been showing inconsistent form and will have a hard time against home team Reno at Frome. Harbour View are seventh with 10 points, while Reno are sitting fifth with 11 points.
Last season’s runner-up and fourth-placed team Tivoli Gardens (12) should also get the better of a St Georges SC outfit languishing at the bottom with four points.
Dubbed the “Arsenal of Jamaica” by their coach Donovan Duckie, sixth-placed Sporting Central Academy (10) should utilise their smooth attacking style at Brancourt to see off new boys Benfica (eight).
