Village fall prey to the Lion
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — Humble Lion’s revival under new coach Lenworth Hyde continued as Village United’s fate worsened under their new coach Christopher Russell after the Clarendon team won their first round Digicel Premier League game 1-0 at the Elliston Wakeland Centre on Sunday.
Kevin Mighty’s second half goal was the difference between the two cellar teams, as Humble Lion moved out of the relegation zone for the first time this season and were replaced by the Trelawny team, who have failed to win in six straight games, while the visitors have not lost since Hyde took over.
The game ended under a cloud after Humble Lion’s Zico Herrera was taken to the nearby hospital with a suspected dislocated ankle suffered in a tackle from Village’s young striker Dino Williams, who saw his first DPL expulsion in the 86th minute as a result.
Village have only themselves to blame for not taking at least a point after they missed a handful of chances early in the game.
Williams should have done better in the 18th minute when he had Humble Lion’s goalkeeper Shawn Sawyers at his mercy, but shot straight at the custodian instead of picking one of the two open sides of the goal.
Sawyers was at it again in the 25th minute when he blocked Teofore Bennett’s point-blanked shot from two yards out.
Humble Lion were patient and had their first real chance in the 48th minute when Herrera’s low hard shot beat goalkeeper Elvis Hart, but hit the base of the right upright and rebounded straight to the thankful goalkeeper.
Mighty snatched the points for Humble Lion in the 72nd minute when he sped between two defenders and then beat the advancing Hart, placing the ball into the far right hand corner of the goal.
Four minutes form the end, Herrera and Williams were caught up in a tangle and the Humble Lion’s midfielder fell to ground in obvious pain and was later taken away in a vehicle to the hospital.
