It should be Reggae Rock in ‘Sarge’ Bucknor Mem Cup
Clive Duncan’s four-year-old bay colt Reggae Rock, a model of consistency all season with two wins to his credit, could summarily increase that figure with victory in the $715,000 GA ‘Sarge’ Bucknor Memorial Cup at Caymanas Park today.
The principal feature on the nine-race card, the ‘Sarge’ Bucknor Memorial Cup will be contested over 1,000 metres straight at 4:30 pm and has attracted a field of eight quick steppers in Overnight Allowance, three-year-olds upward. First post at 12:45 pm.
Also taking the spotlight will be the $735,000 Alex’s ‘Dig Out Handicap’ Race #37 where Restricted Stakes imported three-year-olds and upward (NW3), and native-bred three-year-olds will contest the 1,300 metres event.
Reggae Rock, a versatile son of Go Rockin Robin out of Reggae Star (Star Of Manila) bred at Lakeland Farms, has returned the second fastest time for the event among his rivals for the season. Only Working Image in the line-up has a faster time than Reggae Rock, but the Robert Darby Snr-trained animal will come in with a 3.0kg advantage.
Added to this trainer Darby has gone for the inform lightweight jockey Dick Cardenas, a move which could prove decisive against Working Image, who will be ridden by Dane Nelson and may come a tad heavier for top-two trainer Anthony Nunes.
Despite the fact that Reggae Rock has done his three final workouts at the Equine Pool is no indictment on his readiness. He is fit and ready and so too is Working Image, whose last bullet workout of one minute flat for 1,000 metres straight, is instructive.
While much attention will be concentrated on the afore-mentioned runners, the race is not confined by any stretch of the imagination to these two.
Of the eight runners seven are known high profile performers over the course and only new ‘kid on the block’ the imported Thebandisloose, a five-year-old mare running for the third time in Jamaica, is the unknown quantity in the race. And judging by her last eye-catching effort over 1,100 metres in the class after being slowly into stride, it’s a performance which merits close attention.
Trained by Fitznahum Williams for owners The Sheriff, Thebandisloose is by DJ Cat out of Loose (Never Wavering) bred by Stanley Ersorff in the USA and will be ridden by Richard Mitchell, who will replace claiming apprentice Richard Cole to come in at 53.0kg.
Another American who loves this trip is New Kingston. A proven campaigner trained by Wayne DaCosta, the four-year-old bay gelding by Delaware Township has already won twice over the straight course for the season from three starts and if guided by his last run behind Antioch over 1,100 where he finished four lengths sixth after being competitive up to the final 200 metres, and by returning to the course of his last win he could once again be a reckoning factor among these and close with a flourish to take the major share of the spoils with Omar Walker replacing Kerry-Gayl Robinson in the irons.
