Rivals square-off in Western basketball
SAV LA MAR, Westmoreland — After losing their first game in the ISSA/Western Conference Under-16 Basketball League since 2008, defending champions Cornwall College will seek to rebound when they take on Rhodes Hall High at Mannings today.
Cornwall were on Monday beaten 47-40 by Muschett High at the Montego Bay Cricket Club, while Rhodes Hall were also losing for the first time this season, edged 52-50 by Holland High.
Also today, Spot Valley will host Herbert Morrison in two games, while Mannings School and Cornwall will meet in an Under-19 match in Savanna-La-Mar.
On Monday, Christopher Gibbons scored a game-high 22 points to lead Muschett to their upset come-from-behind win after trailing 7-8 after the first quarter.
A decisive second quarter in which they outscored Cornwall 15-4 was all it took as Muschett were outscored 30-23 in the second half but held on for the win.
Cornwall, however, exacted revenge in the Under-19 game as after Muschett scored the first four points of the game, they were blown out 82-33.
Christopher Ray Smith had a season-high 44 points, 20 rebounds and 10 blocked shots. Robert McIntosh scored nine points, while Alex McFarlane came off the bench to score eight points.
At Holland, the home team came from behind to score a good win, thanks to 22 points, nine rebounds and seven steals from Gian Grey, and 16 points from Clifton Shettleworth.
